Conversations That Feed Hawai‘i’s Future

Demystifying Food Labels — What Do They Really Mean?

Food labels are everywhere — shaping how we shop, what we trust, and often what we are willing to pay. But how much do we really know about terms like “organic,” “local,” “grass-fed,” “cage-free,” or “Hawai`i Seal of Quality”? Join us with nationally recognized food law and policy expert Laurie J. Beyranevand of the Center for Agriculture and Food Systems and Pescosolido Professor of Food and Agricultural Law and Policy at Vermont Law and Graduate School who will lead an engaging discussion exploring the meaning, regulation, and impact of food labels on consumers and producers alike.

Also joining the conversation are Eric Kingma - Hawaii Longline Association, Derek Kurisu - KTA Super Stores, Iris Shimabukuro - Eggs Hawaii/The Hawaiian Egg Company, and Suzanne Shriner - Synergistic Hawaiʻi Agricultural Council and Lions Gate Farms.

Through a thought-provoking keynote and panel discussion featuring local experts representing Hawaiʻi’s agriculture, food, and consumer sectors, guests will gain a deeper understanding of the labels that influence our food choices and the challenges and opportunities they create within Hawaiʻi’s food system.

The evening combines meaningful conversation with chef-crafted, locally inspired tastings, and opportunities to connect with community leaders and industry professionals in a relaxed and engaging atmosphere.Whether you're a consumer, producer, educator, or simply curious about where your food comes from, EAT THINK DRINK promises an enjoyable evening of learning and connection.
